Beyond the Book: Octopuses, Intelligence, and Ocean Life with Dr. Tory Chase

Date: February 19, 2026
Time: 6:00pm – 7:00pm
Location: Harry Dutcher Community Room

Join us for a fascinating talk on octopus intelligence and ocean life with Dr. Tory Chase, Visiting Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies and Sciences at Skidmore College, presented in conjunction with SaratogaREADS!2026 and the community selection The Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery. No registration required.

Drawing on his background in marine ecology and science communication, Dr. Chase will explore the complex lives of octopuses within the broader context of ocean ecosystems, highlighting what these remarkable animals can teach us about intelligence, adaptation, and our relationship to the sea. His research spans coral reef ecology, climate change impacts, and human stressors on marine environments, informed by work at reefs in Australia, the Caribbean, and beyond.

More about our speaker: Dr. Chase grew up in New England and has worked at zoos, aquariums, museums, and in classrooms from high school to the university level. At Skidmore, he strives to “bring the ocean” into his teaching and research, engaging students and communities in understanding and protecting marine life. This accessible and engaging program is ideal for readers of The Soul of an Octopus and anyone curious about ocean science and conservation.

This program is inspired by our 2026 SaratogaREADS! selection, The Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montogmery.
