1893 Chicago World’s Fair through American Photos

Date: February 21, 2026
Time: 2:00pm – 3:00pm
Location: Susman Room

Join us for a fascinating presentation by Skidmore College art history senior Andrew Crews, who will share his honors project with our community. In this engaging 20-minute talk, followed by a brief Q&A, Andrew will explore the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair through three remarkable American photo albums.

Using vivid slide examples, he’ll take a closer look at how the Japanese pavilion and its exhibits were portrayed, and what these images reveal about America’s complicated—and often prejudiced—views of Japan at the time. Andrew will also provide helpful historical context about Japanese-American relations in the late 19th century and the era’s growing enthusiasm for photography.

Whether you love history, photography, or learning something new, this is a thoughtful and eye-opening program you won’t want to miss. No registration required.
